Caterpillar Inc. announced the upcoming CAT S60 rugged smartphone featuring thermal imaging by FLIR and an underwater camera. The S60 is the first smartphone with a fully integrated thermal camera. It is capable of measuring surface temperatures from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet. The thermal imaging feature is intended to have a wide variety of uses in fields such as emergency services, construction, home repair, and utility work. The S60 is also currently the most waterproof smartphone, capable of submersion in depths up to 5 meters for 1 hour. It has a 13MP main camera with dual flash that is listed as an underwater camera, so the S60 is actually designed for underwater use and not just accidental submersion.

Other features include a strengthened die cast frame, shock resistance to 1.8 meter drops (MIL Spec 810G), a 4.7″ (540 nits) display with Gorilla Glass 4, 3800mAh battery, 105dB speaker, and 5MP front-facing camera. The Android Marshmallow-powered smartphone supports 4G LTE and has a Snapdragon 610 Octa-core processor, 32GB ROM storage, and 3GB RAM. Like the rugged CAT S40 and S50 smartphones, the CAT S60’s touchscreen is operable with wet fingers and gloves. The list price of the CAT S60 is €649 and $599.
